Visa Power Travel 2026: Is the 20% Reward Really Worth It?

A closer look at the conditions behind the headline reward percentage.

A 20% travel reward sounds like the kind of offer you shouldn’t ignore. Visa’s Power Travel campaign is currently offering eligible India-issued Visa cardholders additional rewards on qualifying international spending, with the campaign running through 31 January 2027, subject to reward availability.

But there’s an important catch. You can’t simply take your Visa card abroad, spend normally and assume you’re getting 20% back. The headline number is made up of different reward components, and whether you actually get the full benefit depends on how and where you spend. So before changing the way you spend overseas, let’s break down what the offer actually means.

First: what is Visa Power Travel?

Visa Power Travel is a promotional rewards campaign for eligible India-issued Visa credit, debit and prepaid cards. It started on 20 April 2026 and currently runs until 31 January 2027, unless the reward pool runs out earlier.

The offer has multiple layers rather than one flat 20% reward. According to the current campaign terms summarised by SaveSage, the components include:

  • 0.5% base reward
  • Additional 10% reward for qualifying transactions
  • Jetsetter milestone bonus of up to ₹10,000
  • A separate ₹12,000 International Student Education Bonus under its own eligibility conditions

That distinction matters, because “up to 20%” doesn’t mean every eligible transaction earns 20%.

So where does the 20% come from?

The base reward is 0.5% on eligible transactions. The additional 10% applies to qualifying purchases made through specified Tap to Pay methods or participating Visa partners. Then there’s the Jetsetter milestone bonus, which can provide up to ₹10,000 when the required spending and transaction conditions are met.

So the headline isn’t simply spend ₹1 lakh, automatically get ₹20,000. There are conditions attached to each component, which is why it’s worth looking at the mechanics instead of the headline.

Who can actually use it?

The campaign is aimed at holders of eligible India-issued Visa consumer credit, debit and prepaid cards. Corporate, commercial and business cards are excluded under the current terms.

Here’s something useful: your bank isn’t necessarily the deciding factor. Visa is running the campaign directly, so eligibility depends on the card and campaign conditions rather than one particular issuer. Still, your card’s forex markup and normal rewards matter when deciding whether the offer is actually attractive.

Where can you earn the extra reward?

The eligible destination list changes during the campaign. For the initial period through 30 September 2026, it covered:

  • Australia
  • France
  • Japan
  • Nepal
  • Sri Lanka
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • UAE
  • UK
  • USA
  • Vietnam

From 1 October 2026, the campaign expands to overseas destinations outside India, subject to the applicable conditions. But destination is only one part of the equation. The merchant and payment method matter too.

The extra 10% is where things get interesting

Qualifying transactions can receive the additional reward through supported Google Pay or Samsung Pay Tap to Pay transactions, or through listed Visa partners such as Klook, Grab, Gardens by the Bay, Universal Studios Singapore, Resorts World Sentosa and Singapore Oceanarium, depending on the destination and applicable conditions.

So when you’re travelling, don’t think “I’m using a Visa card, therefore I’m getting the bonus.”

Think: “Does this specific transaction qualify?”

The ₹1 lakh milestone

The current terms state that you need ₹1 lakh of eligible spending across at least 20 transactions to qualify for the Jetsetter bonus. Someone who naturally spends ₹1 lakh on qualifying international purchases may find the offer much more useful than someone trying to manufacture spending to chase it.

Don’t change your spending just because an offer exists. Use an offer when it fits spending you were already going to make.

The offer only pays out on spending that qualifies, so check before you tap.

Don’t forget Dynamic Currency Conversion

You’re abroad. The card terminal asks: “Pay in INR or local currency?” It can be tempting to choose INR because the amount looks familiar, but Dynamic Currency Conversion can involve an unfavourable exchange rate. Checking the currency and rate being applied can be just as important as the promotional reward you’re chasing.

A great rewards offer doesn’t turn a bad currency conversion into a good deal.

Not every transaction qualifies

The campaign has exclusions and transaction-specific rules. For example, the current terms say that:

  • General online transactions with non-partner merchants may not qualify.
  • Refunded, reversed, cancelled or declined transactions don’t qualify.
  • Certain hotel bookings made through unrelated platforms don’t qualify.
  • ATM withdrawals only receive the base reward and don’t count toward the milestone.

ATM withdrawals are particularly worth avoiding as a way to chase rewards: cash-advance fees, ATM charges, forex costs and interest can overwhelm the reward.

The real question isn’t “Can I get 20%?”

It’s “How much will I actually get?” Before spending, check:

  1. Is my Visa card eligible?
  2. Is my destination eligible?
  3. Does this merchant qualify?
  4. Does my payment method qualify?
  5. What forex markup does my card charge?
  6. Am I naturally going to meet the milestone requirements?
  7. What can I actually redeem the reward for?

Once you answer those, the headline percentage becomes much less important.

What can you redeem the rewards for?

The campaign allows rewards to be redeemed in ₹1,000 blocks, with options including Air India vouchers and Amazon Pay e-gift cards, subject to the campaign’s rules and limits, and a ₹50,000 reward cap per eligible card. The reward isn’t necessarily coming back to you as unrestricted cash, and a reward is only as useful as your ability to actually use it.

Is Visa Power Travel worth it?

It can be. But not simply because it says “20%.” It’s potentially attractive if:

  • You’re already spending internationally.
  • Your card is eligible.
  • Your transactions qualify for the additional reward.
  • You’re using supported merchants or payment methods.
  • Your forex costs don’t wipe out the benefit.
  • You can naturally meet the milestone requirements.
  • The redemption options are useful to you.

If you’re only earning the base reward on ordinary transactions, the economics may look very different.

Don’t let the headline choose your card

Credit-card promotions are designed to grab your attention: 10X, 20%, ₹10,000 bonus, free travel. But the number on the banner is only the beginning. The real question is what you actually get after the conditions, fees and exclusions. If you’re choosing a card for the long run, our credit card recommendation tool ranks cards on your own spend, categories and fee limit rather than on a campaign.

BTTP’S TAKE

Offers like Visa Power Travel are exactly why rewards shouldn’t be treated as a simple points balance. The value depends on your card, your spending, your destination, your payment method, the merchant, the fees, the redemption option and the current campaign rules.

Instead of chasing every offer you see, understand which offers actually improve your rewards strategy. Check the conditions, your forex costs, transaction eligibility and the redemption options. Then decide. The best rewards aren’t the ones with the biggest headline. They’re the ones that give you the most value.
