How to Use Credit Card Points for Hotel Stays

Compare cash and points prices, know your card’s hotel redemption value, and check availability before transferring.

Hotel stays can be one of the most satisfying ways to use credit card points. A well-planned redemption can cut the cash cost of a trip, or let you stay somewhere you otherwise wouldn’t. But not every hotel redemption is good value, and each card handles hotels differently. Here’s how to evaluate your options.

1. Compare the cash price with the points price

Before redeeming, check:

  1. The cash price for the same room and dates.
  2. The number of points required.
  3. Taxes, resort fees and other charges.
  4. Cancellation rules and booking flexibility.

Then estimate the value you’re getting:

VALUE PER POINT

(Cash price − extra fees) ÷ points required

Using the same calculation for every option lets you compare them fairly.

2. Check your card’s hotel redemption options

Different cards offer very different ways, and values, for hotel bookings:

HDFC Regalia GoldRedeem for hotels and flights on SmartBuy. HDFC lists ₹0.50 per point.Up to 50,000 points a month, and points can cover at most 70% of the booking
Amex Platinum TravelRedeem Membership Rewards points for vouchers, or transfer to participating airline and hotel programmes.Transfer ratios and partner terms before moving points

The same 10,000 points can be worth ₹10,000 on one card and ₹5,000 on another, so know your card’s rate before comparing a points price with cash.

Flexible dates and a nearby alternative property often reveal a better redemption.

3. Check availability before transferring

If you plan to transfer points to a hotel loyalty programme, confirm the hotel has award availability on your dates first. Transfers may be irreversible, and points in a partner programme can have different expiry rules from your card points.

4. Don’t ignore the total cost

A points booking can still carry taxes, fees or other charges. Compare the final cost, not just the points required, with the cash booking, and make sure both include the same room type and inclusions such as breakfast.

5. Keep your travel plans flexible

If your dates are flexible, compare nearby dates and different properties. Award prices and availability vary, and shifting your stay by a day or two can reveal a much better redemption.

TURN POINTS INTO A BETTER STAY

Card points can buy a great hotel stay when you compare the full cost, confirm availability, and pick the redemption that matches your plans.
