For years, collecting credit-card points felt simple. Spend more. Earn more points. Save them for a trip.
In 2026, that equation isn’t quite as straightforward. Indian credit-card issuers have been changing reward rates, adding caps, tightening benefit eligibility and reshuffling transfer partners. Axis, HDFC, SBI, Amex, ICICI and other issuers have all made notable changes this year.
If you’re sitting on thousands of points, the bigger question is: what are they actually worth today?
The number in your rewards account isn’t the real value
Say you have 50,000 credit-card points. Seeing “50,000” in your account feels good, but the number by itself doesn’t tell you much. The real value depends on how you use them. Those points could be worth very different amounts depending on whether you redeem them for:
- Flights
- Hotel stays
- Airline miles
- Hotel loyalty programmes
- Travel bookings
- Other redemption options
That’s where many cardholders get stuck. They know how many points they have. They just don’t know what those points can actually do. Our reward points calculator is a quick way to find out for a flight: pick your card, an airline partner and a route.
2026 has made this even more important
The rewards ecosystem isn’t static anymore. In September, for example, Axis reshuffled its transfer-partner structure, moving Air India, Flying Blue and Qantas into a lower-capped transfer group while adding or restoring other partners. Other issuers have changed reward rates, cashback caps, lounge conditions and other benefits throughout the year.
One tracker monitoring Indian cards recorded hundreds of reward-rule change events over the past year. The strategy that worked six months ago isn’t necessarily the one you should use today, and keeping track of every change yourself is basically a full-time job.
